Abstract

Understanding the breastfeeding process in addition to its hormonal and physiological determinations and assessing its success not only by purely technical aspects, is a current challenge. The breastfeeding paradigm still anchored in a biologicista view needs to be changed, as breastfeeding must be understood not only as biologically determined, but also socioculturally conditioned. It is to build a new perspective on breastfeeding, which values its experience in the social, cultural, and economic reality of the mother and Child dyad. In this sense, this article presents the report of the experience of home visits as a care technology in encouraging exclusive breastfeeding for mothers in a Family Health Strategy in a city in the South of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was observed that the home visit contributes to the maintenance of exclusive breastfeeding, in addition to enabling the nursinsg student to develop skills for care and educational actions, a fact that makes it an effective care technology.
