Contributions of the Graduate Program in Environmental Science and Conservation to the generation of scientific knowledge that promotes regional development and conservation of coastal ecosystems of the Northern Rio de Janeiro State

The Graduate Program in Environmental Science and Conservation (PPG-CiAC), established in 2011, is the first GP of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) outside the State’s capital. Over the past five years, more than 50 MSc Dissertations were defended in the Program, usually focused on the ecosystems and society of northern Rio de Janeiro State, a region that has experienced major socio-economic changes in recent decades. Together, the production of the PPG-CiAC contributes to the increase of multi- and interdisciplinary regional scientific knowledge, based on the integration of Natural and Social Sciences. In this article, a summary of the main contributions of the PPG-CiAC focused on promoting sustainable development of the region is presented.
