The aim of this article is to analyze graduate study in Rural Extension in the country. After outlining the historical evolution and the current situation of these programs, their specificities and difficulties are examined and the challenges and perspectives of creating doctoral programs in the field (which do not as yet exist in Brazil) are discussed.
