Abstract

Books as a signifi cant part of intellectual production have not been evaluated in the fi eld of Health. This paper presents a methodology developed thus far for evaluating books produced by Physical Education, Phonoaudiology, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy during the year 2005. This evaluation is apart from the evaluation of scientifi c journals, and it emphasizes quality in two dimensions: relevance/impact and publisher’s profi le. One hundred and eight books from fi fteen graduate studies courses were evaluated. There was a predominance of edited books (books with a collection of chapters by different authors), most of which would be more adequate as a paper in a scientifi c journal. Considering fi ve concept levels (excellent, very good, good, regular and weak), a signifi cant part (almost 50%) of the book production in the fi eld was evaluated as “regular”.
