The scientifi c production of the 10 graduate programs in Oceanography in Brazil was evaluated for the period 1998- 2006. The programs produced 617 master and 180 PhD theses (8.1 and 4.9 theses per year, respectively). Total articles increased 150% during the period, from 138 to 340 articles per year. Papers published in Qualis A journals increased from 67 to 199 (200%), whereas the sum of the journals’ impact factor increased 480%. Annually, these three indicators showed an average increase of 11%, 13% and 24%, respectively. The production was published in 240 different Qualis A journals. Regional imbalance was not evident. The maturity and consolidation of the scientifi c production and the trans-disciplinary nature of the area suggest that CAPES should evaluate Oceanography in Brazil as an Area rather than as a Sub-Area evaluated in different committees.Downloads
