Gender representation in neuroscience in Brazil: general perspectives in graduate programs and a specific focus on STEM perspectivas gerais na pós-graduação e um recorte na Área de Exatas

Abstract

Neuroscience is an area that involves multiple specialties, with great potential for scientific, technological, health and social development. Although extremely important for the advancement of research, this interdisciplinarity makes it difficult to understand how social issues such as diversity and inclusion are reflected among researchers in the area. A survey made with data from SBNeC, the main Brazilian neuroscience society, revealed an alarming gender disparity between members of the directory board and participants of the events promoted by the society. In this work, we extend this mapping to other contexts of neuroscience in Brazil. We collected data on graduate neuroscience programs, analyzing gender disparities at the university. We also analyzed data from the Latin American school of computational neuroscience LASCON and Brazilian researchers in computational neuroscience Neurocompbr, making a specific picture of neuroscience in STEM. In general, we found a low female representation in leadership positions even when the number of female students is greater than the number of male students. We highlight the importance of greater transparency in the characteristics of faculty and students in graduate programs, including issues such as gender and race. Finally, we discuss a series of actions and public policies that could be applied to create a more inclusive and diverse scientific environment.
