Abstract

This paper argues that current academic master’s degree programs do not meet teachers’ needs, and defends the introduction of professional master’s degree programs in teaching. This degree is to be offered to inservice teachers, with a curriculum that includes the subject matter of their specific field of knowledge, as well as didactical and pedagogical preparation. It should be offered by qualified institutions, with a duration comparable to that of academic programs, and have a specific evaluation committee at the Coordinating Body for Perfecting Graduate Studies in Higher Education (Capes).
