In this paper we present an experience in higher education in the Brazilian Amazon region, in the state of Rondônia. We describe a master’s program in psychology offered by the Universidade de São Paulo to a faculty group of the Universidade de Rondônia, with the support of at the Coordinating Body for Perfecting Graduate Studies in Higher Education (Capes). We consider the experience to have been successful, as it brought benefits not only to the Universidade de Rondônia but also to the faculty of the Universidade de São Paulo. By describing this experience we hope to contribute to the discussion of educational priorities in our country, as well as to local activities which may help reduce social disparities. We evaluate this experience as an emancipating educational action and a necessary contribution to the improvement of Brazilian higher education.
