Interdisciplinary in the Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences of the Institute of Science and Technology of Sorocaba – Unesp: experiences of management

Abstract

The area of Environmental Sciences is recent and emerging in the Brazilian graduate level, and its complexity emphasizes the importance of the interdisciplinary approach in the dimensions of teaching, research, and extension. This study presents an account of the experiences of academic management that promoted interdisciplinarity in the Postgraduate Program in Environmental Sciences (PPGCA) of the Instituto de Ciência e Tecnologia de Sorocaba of the Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho”. The study covered the results of the management guidelines to the promotion of interdisciplinarity, in a scholarly and social context, along the period between 2013 and 2015. Some of the effects of these guidelines are consolidated in the events promoted to the university’s internal and external community, aimed to a specific public, such as university members, Sorocaba region inhabitants, and students of primary and secondary schools. The innovative teaching activities adopted corresponded to the constructivist approach, correlation of different subjects, and a structuring project. The internationalization activities of the program, in turn, included the invitation of visiting professors from international research and teaching institutions, as well as the participation of professors and students of the program in exchange activities,  teaching and postdoctoral internships. As consequence, there has been an increase in the interdisciplinary bibliographical production, by their teaching and student body, published in high quality journals – from 3.2% in 2013 to 41.7% in 2015. Such results show the strengthening of PPGCA, based on guidelines oriented towards the promotion of interdisciplinarity, being able to serve as basis for the discussions of other graduate programs around the country.

Biografia
Leonardo Fernandes Fraceto, ICTS/Unesp
Possui graduação em Bacharelado em Química pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1997), graduação em Licenciatura Em Química pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2000), mestrado em Biologia Funcional e Molecular pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2000) e doutorado em Biologia Funcional e Molecular pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2003). Atualmente é Professor Adjunto da Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho - Campus Sorocaba junto ao curso de Engenharia Ambiental e no Programa de Pós-graduação em Ciências Ambientais. Foi coordenador do Programa de Pós-graduação em Ciências Ambientais da Unesp/Sorocaba (de 06/2012 à 04/2016). Atua também como professor no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Biologia Funcional e Molecular da Universidade Estadual de Campinas. Tem experiência na área de Química e Bioquímica, com ênfase em Química de Macromoléculas, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: nanobiotecnologia, sistemas carreadores (ciclodextrinas, micro e nanopartículas poliméricas) de compostos bioativos (fármacos, pesticidas), métodos espectroscópicos de análise e RMN.
Gerson Araujo de Medeiros, ICTS/Unesp
Graduated in Agricultural Engineering, Mastership and Doctorate in Water and Soil Engineering from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), where studied the influence of water and tropical soil management at yield and water consumption of irrigated bean, an important crop for the Brazilian diet; Expert in Drainage and Watershed Management from Universidade de Taubaté (UNITAU). In 2015, to reinforce international insertion, developed studies at post-doctoral level on economic aspects of ecosystems services at the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences (ALES), University of Alberta (UofA), in Edmonton, Canada. Since 2011 has been Professor at Institute of Science and Technology of Sorocaba (ICTS) at Universidade Estadual de São Paulo (UNESP) for the graduate course in Environmental Sciences and undergraduate course in Environmental Engineering, where has developed an educational constructivist approach based on landscape analyzes, as a way to evolve the understanding of environmental complexity. Has attended several conferences, symposiums and seminars on Environmental Sciences, including topics such as environmental impacts assessment, environmental management, water and soil management and landscape analyzes. The academic production includes 10 book chapters, 57 articles, 253 conference papers and abstracts, amounting over 300 publications. The broad experience and expertise in teaching, researching and academic extension have allowed developing works approaching different social groups as rural settlements, neighborhood communities, philanthropic institutions, and high school students, addressing the popularization of science and environmental issues such as natural resources management, re-vegetation of degraded land and waste management. Therefore, this academic journey has demonstrated guidance towards the improvement of the society welfare.
