SCIENTIFIC OUTPUT VS. INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE: ANALYSIS OF FACULTY MEMBERS IN A SOUTHERN BRAZILIAN DENTAL SCHOOL

This study aimed to evaluate the association between experience abroad and scientific production indicators of faculty members at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (FO-UFRGS). This observational, cross-sectional, retrospective and analytical study evaluated a sample of 98 faculty members from FO-UFRGS. Information was collected from Scopus and the Lattes curriculum regarding the indicators intellectual production and experience abroad by 2 trained examiners. Experiences abroad were considered: completion of a full master's or doctorate, sandwich doctorate, or postdoctoral work for a minimum period of 6 months. For the analysis of intellectual production, the following were evaluated: number of scientific articles on the Lattes and Scopus Platforms. The h-index and number of citations were collected from the Scopus database. The analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney test. Of the 98 faculty members evaluated, 41.8% had experience abroad and 62.2% were or are professors/researchers of a Graduate Program. Additionally, 51% are female, and the average doctoral completion time was 13.5 years. Significant differences were observed between experience abroad and intellectual production of faculty members for all evaluated indicators. It is concluded that there was a significant association between experience abroad and scientific production indicators of the FO-UFRGS faculty members.
