Graduate programs in Education: are they spaces to learn about university teaching?

Abstract

This paper discusses the results of research done with professorsresearchers who coordinate graduated programs in Education in two Brazilian state universities. We tried to understand how these programs receive professors with various disciplinary backgrounds and if university teaching was part of the program’s preoccupation. Data indicate no clear-cut position. The representation about university teaching shared by the participants links teaching with research. However, pedagogical knowledge is expressed through generic formulations. Master and Doctoral studies are perceived as a privileged place to form university teachers; nevertheless the professors admit that programs are focused on forming researchers, neglecting teaching, which is congruent with the norms of the national regulating agency.
